Free School Holiday Discovery Centre Sessions: Fri 3 July – Sun 19 July 2026

Who: Best suited for kids aged 5 – 12
What: Self guided discovery: With no need to book, kids can take their time wandering through our interactive exhibit to find clues and answers and play a game of I Spy for a chance to win prizes! Simply ask our discovery centre staff whenever you arrive.
Where: Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre, Cooma, NSW

ConASTA: 7 – 10 July 2026

Who: Science teachers, educators, lab technicians, and the science education industry
What: ConASTA stands for the Conference for Australian Teacher’s Association. The Snowy STEM Academy attends ConASTA every year to provide new ways to look into STEM via assets, engineering and science at Snowy Hydro and in the Snowy Hydro Scheme.
Where: 2026 ConASTA will be held in Brisbane

National Science Week: 15 – 23 August 2026

Who: All Australian Students and Teachers!
What: Ready to show your students that sustainability is far more than just recycling?
Bring the “Block by Block: Building a Sustainable Future”* session to your class! In this interactive challenge, students step into the shoes of energy company decision-makers. Armed with 20 blocks, they must prioritise critical sustainability topics from renewable energy to community safety.
But… There’s a twist! midway through, a surprise “curveball” scenario hits, forcing them to navigate complex trade-offs in real-time. It’s an engaging way to explore STEM careers and the reality of the intersection of science, business and ethics in decision-making.

Inspire your future change makers and register your interest now to receive this free resource to run in your class launching for National Science Week 2026**. This lesson will be available to use any time, anywhere, even after National Science Week.

Future events

Talbingo Careers Fairs: TBC 2026

Who: Registered year 10 students
What: Our Year 10 Career Fair gives students a hands-on, real-world look at the exciting STEM career pathways available right here in their own backyard. From immersive experiences to meeting industry experts, the day was packed with inspiration, learning and provided a glimpse into the workforce of the future. Students explored engineering, climate science, and technology through talks from Snowy team members, including engineers, surveyors, apprentices, and tech specialists. A career panel and Q&A session provided insights and advice, helping students learn more about potential career paths.
Where: Talbingo in September

It Takes a Spark STEM Conference – Melbourne: 22 October 2026

Who: year 4-10 Students, Teachers, Heads of learning areas/curriculum, Principals and deputy principals.
What: The program is different to many conferences namely it is intended for both Teachers and Students to attend. This parallel learning experience facilitates shared knowledge and collaboration between Teachers and their Students.
Over the course of the day educators and students will attend a variety of sessions together including, a Digi-Design Mini Workshop, a Problem Solvers Design Challenge and Keynote Speaker Presentations. Teachers also have the option to attend Teacher only Mini Masterclasses and networking sessions.
The brightest educators and students who are passionate about STEM and key organisations will lead the action-packed sessions. Attendees will also have the opportunity to explore the STEAM Expo and discover the latest technologies and resources.
The event format provides a unique opportunity for Teachers to engage in hands-on professional learning with the option of attending with Students.

International Women’s Day STEM High Tea: Annually – March

Who: Year 11 and 12 Students
What: Snowy Hydro hosts an annual Snowy STEM Academy High Tea to celebrate International Women’s Day! We are thrilled to be hosting this event connecting our local year 11 and 12 students with Snowy STEM experts for an engaging speed-mentoring session. The event features a keynote speaker who will highlight the power of mentorship at every career stage and the opportunities it can unlock.

Snowy STEM Academy Schools Fund: February – March annually

Who: Local Schools
What: Since its launch in 2023, the Snowy STEM Academy Schools Fund (Previously Local School STEM Fund) has provided regional schools in the Snowy Mountains, Snowy Valleys, Towing and Cessnock areas with critical resources to bridge the gap between industry innovation and classroom learning.
Where: Across the Snowy Mountains, Snowy Valleys and Towong and Cessnock LGAs

South Australian Science Teachers Association annual conference: April

Who: Science teachers, educators, lab technicians, and the science education industry
What: Join us at the South Australian Science Teachers Association annual conference for a workshop on the new Energy Literacy Syllabus from the Snowy STEM Academy. Explore new free resources and teacher support and find out what we have in store for the near future too!
Where: Adelaide

Entry Level Programs Roadshow: Annually May – June

Who: year 11 and 12 Students
What: In collaboration with the Development team of Snowy Hydro, the ELP Roadshows provides an opportunity to explore Entry Level programs such as traineeships and apprenticeships that are provided at Snowy Hydro.
Where: Locally near Cooma NSW

Science Teachers’ Association NSW annual conference: 12-13 June 2026

Who: NSW Teachers of all secondary Science subjects
What: STA NSW brings together the NSW Science teaching community, across all school sectors.
This conference is structured to be the launchpad and support system for navigating curriculum changes, offering streams for both Junior and Senior Secondary Science implementation. It’s a “one-stop shop” professional learning event, offering distinct content across both days, while providing a valuable, stand-alone program on the weekend (Saturday) to help teachers maximise professional learning budgets and reduce casual relief costs.
Where: Macquarie University, Sydney, NSW

Education Programs at the Discovery Centre

Who: Any school or school aged community groups
What: Throughout the year, we supply our three types of programs for schools to attend, providing insight into select curriculum topics including water, electricity, energy and much more. This includes our PowerUp, Megawatt and Gigawatt programs.
Where: The Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre – Cooma NSW

Community Grants Program: Feb-April and Sept-Nov

Who: Community groups and businesses in the regions where Snowy Hydro operate
What: The Education Team support the Community Grants Program for our local businesses. The next round of applications for the Snowy Mountains Community Grants Program will reopen 28th February 2026
Where: Snowy Monaro, Snowy Valleys and Towong local government areas

Harmony Week: Annually – March

Who: Primary School Students
What: During Harmony Week, the Snowy STEM Academy hosts a Harmony Day afterschool event for children to communicate their own meaning of harmony. This event is heavily linked with Multicultural Centers.
Where: The Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre – Cooma NSW

Reconciliation Week: Annually – May/June

Who: All community members
What: The Snowy STEM Academy team assist in events for reconciliation week every year, reflecting its importance to all ages
Where: Local activations – Cooma, NSW

NAIDOC Week: July

Who: Local students, school staff and Snowy Hydro staff
What: During NAIDOC Week, the Snowy STEM Academy runs tailored programs with First Nations STEM. This includes internally with staff and externally with students.
