Energy Literacy

Energy Literacy Syllabus

At Snowy Hydro, we believe that our legacy is more than the transition to sustainable energy. It’s about sustainable communities too. We love our industry, but we also recognise that not every individual will be involved in a STEM career within the transition. All Australians who use electricity are a part of the communities we serve. Launching in April 2026, The Energy Literacy Syllabus (ELS) is set up to provide Australians, starting in schools, with the key information needed to make decisions and be a part of Australia’s sustainable energy future.

The Power Peak game

Power Peak is designed to learn about the relationship between electricity generation and the height that water travels before going through Snowy Hydro turbines!
While skiing down mountains, jumping off ledges and collecting boosts, generate enough electricity to keep building your own hydro-power network that you might even be able to use to power ALL of Australia!

Through this game, discover forces, unit conversion, and how much energy it takes to power Australia!

Power Peak was created in partnership with Arludo. Register for free on the Arludo site to be ready to access the game, supporting lessons and data generated by your own class to discuss as soon as its launched!

Can’t wait to access the game? email us at snowystemacademy@snowyhydro.com.au to request a sneak peek!

Unit plans

Excited to use the game in your classroom when it launches? Use our Unit Plans to add this resource to your teaching sequences. Find complimenting resources, lesson and assessment ideas all in one PDF! Most importantly, the curriculum and achievement standard mapping for these units including Key Learning Area Understanding, General Capabilities and Cross Curriculum Priorities is all done for you.

Year 3-4 and 5-6 unit plans for ACv9 as well as Victorian and New South Wales Curriculum aligned unit plans are coming soon!

Learn more about the Energy Literacy Syllabus

The ELS is broken up into 4 modules which you can think of as tools for a sustainable future. We’re looking to build a tool belt and importantly teach people how to use each of those tools in ways that matter to them.
Each module progresses through 5 levels of literacy to scaffold learning for multiple entry and exit points to suit any age of learning.

The 4 modules

Launching with Module 1, Foundations of energy understanding, the Energy Literacy Syllabus will progress through 4 modules. Each module explores different aspects of Australia’s electricity generation. Throughout the module, learners will craft their skills using the tools relevant to that key concept and learn the relevance of each key component. The modules culminate in empowered participation which extends beyond STEM careers to other professional and trade careers that support the transition. Learners will also feel empowered as energy users to be an active part of the transition to an Australia that runs on renewable energy.

The 5 levels of literacy

Like learning any new topic, understanding the vocabulary is the foundation to deeper learning. Moving through the levels of literacy within each module allows for endless opportunities for exploration, extension and connection to other learning topics from the curriculum and beyond.
