Snowy Hydro’s portfolio of gas generation plant assists us in meeting the needs of customers in the National Electricity Market.

Snowy Hydro has invested in gas-fired electricity generation that significantly enhances our total generation capacity to over 5500 megawatts (MW).  We have two gas-fired plants in Victoria with a total capacity of 620MW - the 320MW Laverton North gas-fired power station located in Laverton North, Melbourne and the 300MW Valley Power gas-fired peaking power station located near Traralgon, Victoria.  Snowy Hydro also owns the largest gas-fired generation plant in New South Wales, Colongra Power Station - located on the NSW Central Coast - with a generating capacity of 667MW.  All are remotely operated from Snowy Hydro’s central control room in Cooma but are also equipped with full local control.

Snowy Hydro’s portfolio of gas generation plant assists us in meeting the needs of our customers in the NEM.  Gas is one of the most reliable sources of power generation because of its fast start capability, which is comparable to hydro.  Our gas-fired generation assets significantly enhance our existing generation capacity at times of local peaks and during transmission constraints.
