Managing water and protecting the environment

Water sits at the centre of the Snowy Scheme. It enables renewable energy generation, supports downstream communities and sustains important river systems across south-eastern Australia.

Our responsibility is to manage this resource carefully and in balance with the environment.

Managing water responsibly

Under the Snowy Water Licence, we operate within defined release rules for the Murray, Murrumbidgee and Snowy Rivers, including environmental flow requirements.

Water releases are planned and managed using real-time hydrological data, weather forecasting and operational modelling. This allows us to balance electricity generation with river health, downstream water users, irrigation needs and environmental outcomes.

Our teams continuously monitor catchment conditions and adapt operations where required, particularly during periods of drought, heavy rainfall or changing seasonal conditions.

Protecting river health

Healthy rivers are essential for ecosystems, agriculture and local communities.

We work to maintain natural flow patterns where possible and support initiatives that improve riverbank stability, water quality and habitat conditions. This includes collaboration with government agencies and river management authorities to strengthen long-term river health.

Biodiversity and habitat protection

We operate in distinctive environments, including alpine landscapes and sensitive waterways.

Across our sites, we implement measures to protect native vegetation, manage invasive species and minimise land disturbance. We also support habitat restoration projects and conservation programs for threatened species in the regions where we operate.

For major projects, environmental management plans are developed to identify risks early and set clear controls during construction and operation.
