The Tumut 3 Power Station Tours are now closed. This is due to the commencement of the largest upgrade and refurbishment project of the Tumut 3 Power Station since its completion in 1974. In the interests of safety, public access to the power station (including the power station tours) and surrounding precinct is not permitted.
The project will involve the replacement of the runner in each generator, a major overhaul of the plant, an upgrade of the electrical controls and protection, repainting and maintenance while each unit is out of service.
To achieve the planned program of works an experienced team of Snowy Hydro specialist employees are involved and will be supported by contractors. At the peak of activity we expect to have around 100 extra people working on Tumut 3 Power Station. It is envisioned that a significant number of these workers will be staying in Talbingo and Tumut, adding significantly to the local economy.
The new Snowy Mountains Scheme Talbingo Visitor Display is now open to the public. This display, located at the Talbingo Shopping Centre, provides information on Tumut 3 Power Station and the works being undertaken. There are also a number of displays and models on the Snowy Mountains Scheme. This visitor display will be open 7 days a week between the hours of 8:00am and 4:00pm. Entry is free.
For those visitors wishing to experience the Scheme first hand, Murray 1 Power Station Public Inspections are available. Murray 1 Power Station is located on the Alpine Way, 10 kilometres east of Khancoban. Power Station Inspections will occur at 11:00am and 2:00pm, and take approximately 20 minutes. Entry to the power station and Murray 1 Information Centre is also free of charge.
