Mini Hydro Developments

Jounama Small Hydro Project

Project Overview
Snowy Hydro Limited will be constructing a small hydro-electric power station attached to the existing river diversion conduit at Jounama Dam.
The 14 megawatt (MW) small hydro will enable renewable energy to be economically recovered from the release of waters to Blowering Reservoir. The electricity generated will be fed into the local 66 kilovolt (kV) transmission network.
In summary, the small hydro comprises of the components detailed below.
  • A concrete building (silo) 13m in diameter and 30m high located on the downstream side of the Jounama Dam, with its roof set above at least Blowering Reservoirs 1 in 500 year flood level. The silo will contain the 14 MW capacity generator / turbine and associated control systems.
  • The existing River Diversion Conduit inlet arrangement will be refurbished, which will involve replacing the existing stoplog gates.
  • A 4m diameter pipeline (penstock) located downstream of the existing concrete plug inside the River Diversion Conduit.
  • A temporary cofferdam to protect the downstream construction works.
  • A rock lined tailrace (channel) to discharge water from the small hydro to Blowering Reservoir. This channel will distribute water into Blowering Reservoir and maintain a minimum tail water level for the turbine.
  • Development and extension of an existing access road and development of a temporary hardstand area on Snowy Hydro occupied land immediately downstream of the dam.
  • A switchyard comprising of a transformer and switchgear, located on the right hand side of the dam near an existing 11kV / 415V pole-mounted transformer.
  • An 11kV power line extending from the power station building, north-east to the new switchyard.
  • From the switchyard, approximately 700m of the existing 11kV overhead transmission line will be upgraded to 66kV where it will connect to the Tumut-Talbingo 66kV transmission line located along the Snowy Mountains Highway. Both transmission lines are owned and operated by Country Energy.
